Urgent Information regarding Recognised Safeguarding Training
Please be advised that from the 1st April 2010 it became a requirement that anyone working or volunteering with children or vulnerable adults in a regulated activity (Coaches, Volunteers, Club Welfare Officers etc.) completes Safeguarding training as recognised by British Gymnastics. Club Welfare Officers are also required to update their BG Time to Listen training. It is also a requirement for this training to be updated every 3 years to ensure it is consistent with the changes in law and legislation. Those in a regulated activity working or volunteering with children or vulnerable adults who have not already completed any safeguarding training must attend the Sports Coach UK Safeguarding and Protecting Children Level 1 training or a course recognised by British Gymnastics as soon as possible (please see below for recognised courses).
The British Gymnastics Child Protection Awareness and Implementation award is no longer recognised, as it is significantly out of date.
Please see the tables below to indicate when training that has already been achieved should be updated and by when.

Safeguarding and Child Protection Courses
Sports Coach UK
British Gymnastics announced in the March edition of the Gymnast that the Safeguarding and Child Protection Courses will be delivered by Sports Coach UK with effect from 1st April 2010.
Safeguarding and Child protection is a generic issue throughout the whole sporting landscape. British Gymnastics was one of the few NGBs to offer its own courses, and will now follow other NGBs, who have outsourced to Sports Coach UK (including British Swimming, The FA, British Judo and The English Cricket Board).
With Safeguarding and Child Protection courses now mandatory for those in a regulated position, moving to Sports Coach UK will ensure the demand for these courses will be met. It will also benefit BG members, as Sports Coach UK course will give opportunities to interact with other sports and gain different perspectives on the generic issues of safeguarding.
Sports Coach UK will be taking on the existing BG tutors, should they wish to transfer, providing they meet the criteria and standards set by Sports Coach UK.
